You arrive in Mallorca, see SUP, surf and foil all in the same cove and ask: which one is for me? Honest comparison of the three disciplines, with a recommendation by experience, fitness and budget.
The three disciplines in one line
- Stand-up paddle (SUP): long board, paddle, you stand. Flat water, touring, yoga, sightseeing. Most accessible.
- Classic surf: shorter board, prone paddle, pop up on the wave. Needs waves and serious practice.
- Foil (surf foil, wing foil, eFoil): board with an underwater wing that lifts you. Unique sensation. First sessions require an instructor.
Learning curve
- Flat-water SUP: 30 minutes to stand and paddle. One intro lesson is usually enough.
- Classic surf: 5-10 sessions for a whitewater wave. Months or years for green waves.
- Wing foil: 5-10 sessions for controlled flight.
- eFoil: 1 session for short flight, 3-5 sessions for confident turns.
- Surf foil (no motor, on waves): 10-20 sessions. The most demanding.
Indicative cost
Mallorca market prices in 2026 (orientation, not our closed prices):
- SUP rental 1h: 12-18 €. Group lesson 2h: 35-50 €.
- Surf lesson: 35-55 € per group session.
- Wing foil 2h class with gear: 90-130 €.
- eFoil 60-90 min class with gear: 150-250 €.
Conditions each one needs
- Flat SUP: under 10 knots wind, no swell. Summer mornings are perfect.
- Surf: needs waves. Mallorca only delivers a handful of decent days per month with NE ground swell. Spots: Cala Mesquida, Sa Carbó, Cap Blanc.
- Wing foil: 12-20 knots clean wind. The island gets it almost daily in summer thanks to the embat.
- eFoil: with or without wind, flat or slightly choppy water. Most versatile.
Required fitness
Flat SUP: low. Anyone normally fit can do it. Surf: intermediate (paddling tires you). Wing foil: medium-high. eFoil: low (you don’t paddle, the motor moves you). That explains its appeal to non-athletic profiles.
Logical progression in Mallorca
- Start with flat SUP. Intro lesson. Balance, basic water reading, body awareness on a board.
- If waves attract you: try classic surf.
- If you want the foil sensation without fighting wind: go straight to eFoil. The friendliest entry to the foil universe.
- If the wind hooks you: wing foil after.
- Surf foil arrives last, once you have foil balance.
Mixing them
Most advanced riders in Mallorca mix two or three disciplines depending on the day. Flat morning → long SUP or eFoil. Embat afternoon → wing foil. Day with ground swell → classic surf or surf foil. The island lets you alternate.
Final recommendation
There is no “best” sport, only a best first step. If you arrive in Mallorca eager to try, start with SUP. If you have budget and want a unique experience, try eFoil. And if you want to genuinely learn, book several sessions, not one.
