If you had to pick a single moment of the day to SUP in Mallorca, it would be sunrise. Empty bay, sleeping wind, sky colours mirrored on the water. Why getting up early is worth it, and three concrete routes in Pollensa Bay by level.
Why sunrise
- No wind: the embat doesn’t fill in until 12:00. Before 09:00 the sea is usually flat.
- No crowds: tourist boats start around 10:00. Until then it’s you and the fishermen.
- Best light: for photo, focus and mood.
- More wildlife: fish, turtles and birds active at dawn.
Route 1 — Llenaire to Punta Avançada (short, beginners)
Distance: 3-4 km out and back. Duration: 60-90 min. Start: Llenaire beach (Port de Pollença).
You hug the coast east. The Punta Avançada cliff is a good target; at 1.5 km you find clear sandy bottom for a stop and a swim. Return on the same line or shortcut to the marina. Ideal first route.
Route 2 — Albercutx to Cala Sant Vicenç (medium, intermediate)
Distance: 8 km one way. Duration: 2-3 h. Start: Cap Pinar / Albercutx area.
More exposed. You hug the cliffs of the bay’s northern cape, pass several sea caves, see Albercutx watchtower from below. You arrive at Cala Sant Vicenç for a break and a swim. Return on the same coast or by shuttle. Requires confirmed calm sea and a buddy.
Route 3 — Outer Formentor (advanced, conditions allowing)
Distance: 12-18 km. Duration: 4-6 h. Only in optimal conditions.
Hugging the outer Formentor coast is an elite experience. We do not recommend it without an experienced buddy, sea knowledge and a return plan before 11:00 (when the wind starts). Rewards: cut cliffs, deep blue water, total silence. Penalties for mistakes: high. Experience required.
What to bring at sunrise
- Board with leash, always.
- Flotation vest if you go beyond the shore stroll.
- Headlamp for the first minutes before sun.
- Water, dried fruit.
- Reef-safe sunscreen.
- Phone in dry bag tied to the board.
- Light layer (sunrise is 4-6 °C colder than midday, even in summer).
Photo and respect
Sunrise is irresistible for photos, but don’t chase seabirds for a better frame. If you see cormorants fishing, observe from afar. Wildlife is active at dawn precisely because of calm; your intrusion breaks it.
Logistics
If you stay in Pollensa, walk to the beach. From Palma, leave at 06:00 to catch real sunrise (around 06:30 in summer). Llenaire parking is easy at that hour. Return the board by 10:00 if rented.
