People who come to Mallorca for water sports often watch the wind and forget about the sea. Mistake. The sea has its own agenda — especially the north coast — and can be hostile even with a sunny forecast. Read the sea before you launch, no meteorology degree required.

Ground swell vs wind chop

Two different things that add up. Ground swell is wave energy from a distant storm — possibly 2,000 km away — travelling across the ocean to the coast. Long period (8-15 s between crests), the kind that produces surfable waves. Wind chop is local roughness from the current wind. Short period (2-5 s), messy water.

For SUP, chop slows you down and soaks you; ground swell can knock you off.

Currents on north and south coasts

If foam crests aren’t breaking parallel to the shore but at a clear angle, there’s current.

Real waves vs significant height

Forecasts give “significant wave height” — the average of the largest third. The biggest wave of a set can be twice as high. If the forecast says “Hs 1.2 m”, plan for 1.8-2.4 m peaks. Many beginners ignore this and get scared.

Real call: how we decide

Normal June day: AEMET says 8 knots NE, swell 0.4 m. Windy agrees. We arrive at Llenaire: water flat, foam at 2 m from shore, fishermen on small boats. Decision: go. Plan: short route to Punta Avançada, back before 11:00 (when embat starts).

Another day: same forecast but on arrival we see whitecaps at 100 m and cormorants huddled on a rock. Decision: change plan. Drive to Es Trenc, enjoy flat water on the other coast.

Book a guided session

If your eye isn’t trained yet, go guided first. At El Niño Surf Center we’ve been reading the local sea for years. Book an instructor session or ask us if today is safe.
