One of the most common questions from people starting out in paddle surfing (SUP) is: do you have to wear a life jacket? The short answer is that it depends on where you paddle. Here it is, clearly and without jargon.
The quick answer
In Spain there is no single rule requiring a life jacket in every case: what matters is the zone where you paddle. Inside the marked swimming area it is not mandatory; outside it or offshore, it is.
Inside the swimming area
If you paddle within the buoy-marked swimming zone and stay close to shore, the board is treated as a beach article and you are not obliged to wear a life jacket. Even so, we always recommend it for beginners and children.
Outside the swimming area or offshore
When you leave the marked zone or move away from the coast (beyond around 200 metres), the SUP is treated like an engineless recreational craft. In that case an approved life jacket is mandatory, as for any crossing. Maritime safety rules fall under the Spanish Maritime Authority and can vary by region, so when in doubt check with the Balearic Maritime Authority.
Which life jacket to choose
Look for a CE-approved life jacket or buoyancy aid, ideally with reflective bands. For SUP, many riders prefer an inflatable belt (more comfortable for paddling) that activates when you pull a cord.

Whether or not a jacket is legally required, safety comes first at sea: always use a leash, check the wind (an offshore Embat breeze can carry you out without noticing), tell someone your route, and don’t go out if in doubt.
