You’ve been watching efoil videos for weeks and you’ve finally booked your first lesson in Mallorca. Here’s what really happens, step by step, no magic claims. Good news: with a decent instructor most people are flying upright in their first session.
What you need
- Know how to swim. No exceptions.
- Reasonable fitness: not athletic, but able to spend 60 minutes in and out of the board.
- Indicative minimum age: 14 with parental consent, 16+ ideally.
- Weight 35-110 kg depending on model.
- Zero prior experience required.
Equipment and safety
Provided by the school: board, foil, battery, remote, helmet, flotation vest, lycra. Every session opens with a 15-20 minute dry briefing: how to handle the board, the remote, what to do when you fall, where the emergency stop is. If your instructor skips this, bad sign.
Stage 1: prone and kneeling (5-10 min)
You start lying flat on the board in calm shallow water. The instructor shows you how to apply gentle throttle and hold balance. Then you move to kneeling. The foil isn’t in play yet — the board planes on the surface. The goal is to get used to the remote and feel how the board responds to power.
Stage 2: standing without foil (5-10 min)
From kneeling you move to half-stand and then full stand, all at low power, board on the water, no flying yet. Trick: feet evenly spread, eyes on the horizon, weight slightly back. You will fall here. That’s normal.
Stage 3: controlled flight (15-30 min)
Once the instructor sees you holding stance, they invite more throttle. Above a certain speed the foil starts producing lift and you feel the board rise. The first lift-off feels like an old elevator: water contact softens, chop disappears, you start gliding silently.
The big goal of the first session is sustained flight for 5-10 seconds. That’s already a success. Most riders hit it within the 60-minute mark.
Common mistakes
- Weight forward: nose dives. Move feet back, look at the horizon.
- Weight too far back: board pops too high. Move slightly forward.
- Jerky body: foil reacts late. Smooth movements.
- Looking at the wing: you lose balance. Eyes on horizon.
- Throttle panic: less throttle equals worse balance. Speed stabilises.
After the first session
You’ll come out tired, wet, with a bruise or two and a stupid grin. Flying is addictive. Most people want to come back the same week.
Following sessions work on turns, transitions and longer flight. Full autonomy (no instructor) usually takes 4-8 sessions.
