Paddle surfing is a safe sport when practised correctly. However, like any water activity, it requires knowing basic safety rules to avoid dangerous situations.

Mandatory Safety Equipment

Leash: The cord connecting your ankle to the board is the most important safety item. In case of a fall, it keeps the board close to you. Never go in the water without one.

Life jacket: In Spain, regulations require a life jacket when practising non-motorised water sports outside the swimming zone. For children it is mandatory at all times. For adults, wearing it or having it accessible on the board is highly recommended.

Whistle: A small but vital item. In an emergency, a whistle can be heard at a much greater distance than the human voice. Attach it to your life jacket.

Check the Weather Forecast Before Going Out

Wind is paddle surfing’s biggest enemy. With strong offshore wind, the board acts like a sail and can carry you out to sea. Check apps like Windy or WindFinder before heading out. Do not go out in winds above 15-20 knots if you are a beginner.

Maritime Regulations for SUP Boards

In Spain, paddle surf boards outside the swimming zone are considered vessels and must comply with maritime traffic rules. Stay more than 200 metres from beaches with bathers. Do not enter vessel anchorage zones.

Always Tell Someone Before Going Out

The golden rule: never go out without telling someone your destination and expected return time. In an emergency, call 112 (Emergency Services) or Maritime Rescue (900 202 202).
