One of the most frequent questions we receive at El Niño Surf Center is: “When is the best time of year to come to Mallorca for paddle surfing?” The short answer is: almost any time. The longer answer is a little more nuanced.

Spring (March–May): Perfect for Those Who Value Tranquillity

Spring is, for many SUP enthusiasts, the best time of year. The sea starts warming (14–18°C in March-April, up to 20°C in May), the island is not yet crowded with tourists and the coves are practically empty. Days are long, the sun is pleasant and wind conditions are usually favourable in the mornings. You will need a wetsuit in March and April.

Summer (June–August): High Season

Summer is the most popular time for paddle surfing in Mallorca. The water reaches 25–28°C, the sun shines strongly and the days are endless. The downside is wind: the summer sea breeze (“embat”) typically arrives between 11am and 1pm. The solution is simple: go out early.

Tourist numbers peak in July and August, so the most popular coves fill up. With a SUP you have the advantage of being able to explore spots that bathers do not frequent.

Autumn (September–November): The Locals’ Favourite Season

For locals, autumn is the best season without question. The water stays at 23–25°C in September and October, tourist numbers drop dramatically and wind conditions are very favourable. This is the season of “glass afternoons”: days with the sea completely calm, like a mirror. Sunsets are spectacular.

Winter (December–February): For the Most Dedicated

In winter the water drops to 14–16°C and the wind can be intense. However, good winter days are truly special: the sea is empty, the light is golden and the sense of solitude is unique. With a 4/3mm wetsuit you can paddle surf perfectly.

Summary: The Best Months

If you have to choose: May, June, September and October offer the best combination of warm water, fewer crowds and good weather. July and August for those wanting guaranteed sun and heat. Spring and autumn for those who value peace and nature.
