Taking the first step in any new sport can feel daunting, but paddle surfing has the advantage of being intuitive and accessible. In this article we explain step by step what to expect from your first session, what to bring and how to overcome the initial fear of losing your balance.

Before Getting in the Water: Preparation

Preparation starts on land. Wear comfortable swimwear and water-resistant sunscreen (SPF 50 or higher). If the water is cold (below 22°C), consider renting a wetsuit. Drink water before heading out: exercising in the sun makes you dehydrate faster than you think.

Do a basic 5-10 minute warm-up: shoulder rotations, hamstring stretches and ankle rotations. Paddle surfing mainly works the core, shoulders and legs.

The First Minutes: Start on Your Knees

The secret every instructor teaches: start on your knees. Getting straight to your feet is possible but unnecessarily difficult. On your knees, positioned in the centre of the board (there is a carry handle marking the balance point), you will get used to the board’s movements on the water.

Standing Up: The Key Moment

To stand up: place your hands flat on the board at shoulder width, bring one foot up then the other into a crouching position, then straighten your knees until standing. Feet should be parallel, shoulder-width apart, facing forward.

The balance tip: look at the horizon, not your feet. Slightly bent knees at all times.

Falls Are Normal and Part of the Process

Every beginner falls. The key is falling well: always try to fall to the side of the board, not on top of it. Try to keep hold of the paddle when you fall. The leash will keep the board near you at all times.
